FAQs

What kind of massage do you do?

My massage technique combines a variety of modalities in which I have been trained. It is based in traditional Swedish massage, but also can include deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial massage, sports massage, stretching and other techniques specific to different conditions and body areas. Each massage is tailored to the needs of the individual client.

What kind of training do you have?

I am Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork which means I passed the National Certification Exam, and must receive an additional 12 hours of continuing education per year to keep my certification. In addition to completing with honors the 750 hour therapeutic massage program at Louisville School of Massage, I have received additional training in pregnancy massage, massage for low back pain, and massage for migraine and headache. I am constantly seeking to further my education, and this list continues to grow.

What should I do before my massage?

If this is your first massage at restore, please arrive a few minutes early. This will allow time for you to fill out the quick intake form, and for you to talk with the therapist about your needs and expectations for the massage. It is best not to have a massage after a very large meal, and you may wish to wear comfortable clothing when possible.

What should I do after my massage?

Drink lots of water. Hydration helps replenish your body with fluids that process through your body during a massage. You may find that you need to urinate more after a massage, and you want to replace your fluids to keep your muscles healthy.  If possible, plan to take it easy for a short time after the massage, this will allow you to recuperate from any temporary lightheadedness or sleepiness and allow the revitalizing effects of the massage to settle in. In a short time you will feel renewed energy! It can also be nice to take a warm bath or shower that evening to maintain the effects of the massage longer.

Do I have to be undressed for the massage?

It is helpful if the client is undressed, providing better access to the skin and musculature being worked. As a client, your comfort is of utmost importance, and it is always your option to remain clothed to your level of comfort. You will always be covered by a sheet and blanket and only the parts being worked on are uncovered. Private areas remain draped at all times.

Is massage uncomfortable?

Most of the time massage feels relaxing and soothing or invigorating, with occasional sensations of tight muscles “hurting so good” as tension is released. A few exceptions, like trigger point therapy and some kinds of deep-tissue massage, can be very uncomfortable at times. The therapist will always monitor your comfort level and not work beyond what is tolerable for you. Be sure to communicate with the therapist so that your massage is a pleasant experience.

Why do you use stretching with massage?

Stretching is a highly effective way to loosen up tight muscles and joints. Stretching can be done actively (where the client assists) or passively (where the therapist does the work) to work out sore points or 'kinks' in shoulders, lower back or legs. Stretching is a normal part of Sports Massage and may be added to any massage to assist in relieving muscle tension.

What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish Massage is what most people think of as "regular" massage. It combines effleurage (long strokes) and petrissage (kneading) to relax muscles. Additionally, percussion and friction can be used to awaken muscles and address specific areas of tension.

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are spots in the muscles where tension builds up and causes tightness and pain. They are what most people are referring to when they say they have a painful “knot” in their muscle. Trigger points often refer pain to different parts of the body than where they are located. In Trigger point therapy, the massage therapist can release trigger points by using special techniques of pressure and vibration. It can be quite uncomfortable for a moment. Trigger point therapy can release tremendous amounts of tension and make many muscle and joint problems disappear. Often the work is described as a “good kind of pain.”

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is specifically designed to aid athletes in preparing for competition or to soothe the sore muscles that come from strenuous competition or practice. Deep compressive strokes are used to flush out the build up of toxins and relieve cramping and soreness.

Do you do outcall massages?

I do on-site chair massage for group functions and businesses and on-site table massage for retreat gatherings. I only do outcall private table massages for established clients. I do not do massage at the homes of people I do not know.
